Why I Exist

I am a journalist. For most of my schooled-life, writing assignments have been my favorite. I began to love writing in sixth grade, when my English teacher said that I showed real talent. However, at the time I did not think that writing would have any place in my future, because I also loved science. I went through the rest of middle school producing what my teachers considered, according to one report, “excellent essay[s],” without realizing how important writing was to me. It was not until freshman year that my teacher, for whom I am forever grateful for, gave me an application for my school newspaper- “The Eyrie.” I joined, figuring that it would be a fun class. Little did I know that I would fall in love with every aspect of journalism, including the complex writing style. If it was not for joining “The Eyrie,” I would have no idea what I would do with my life.

Presently, I am editor-in-chief of “The Eyrie,” and I could not be more proud of my accomplishment and of my publication. In addition to being editor of my school newspaper, I blog regularly. I absolutely love to learn, but there are days when the only thing that gets me out of bed is the fact that I have to go to Journalism class. The stories that I contribute to the paper range from light-hearted video game reviews to hard opinion pieces. Currently, I plan to attend Kansas State University and major in Journalism. I want to continue to write for the rest of my life for two reasons. The first, because as a poster in my current English class reads, “it’s exciting when you have written something that you know is good.” The thrill of writing a good article, handing in a good essay, or hitting “publish” on my blog compares to nothing else. Second, not only do I want to study journalism, but I want to use my ability to impact the lives of others.

After I graduate college, I hope to use my writing ability to bring pivotal information to people. I firmly believe that all major political news outlets are extremely biased, and that the facts are blurred on both sides of the aisle. I want to be a journalist who gathers the facts and presents them in an appropriate way. If the conservatives are the most factually correct about an issue, interview them and use facts to graciously explain why the liberals are less correct, and vice-versa. I also believe that most people do not care about politics, and I want to present information that is concise, interesting, and relevant. The most important aspect, however, will be explaining why people should care about the information. My goal is to improve the lives of citizens by making them more aware of their world and what is happening in it.

Of all the reasons that I love journalism, the fact that I could inform, sway, or enlighten someone is the most significant. I will study well at KSU, and get a great education that will accelerate me into my field. Then, I will begin my quest to change the lives of my fellow citizens. I believe that if the news is presented correctly, anyone could learn from it. I love journalism, it is my passion. I could not be more excited to start doing what I love, at school and in the field. I will make a difference in the world of news, and the entire human race will benefit from it.
